My interview on forest management practices in Armenia

I think one of the worst forest management practices in Armenia is the extensive collection of deadwood by local communities for firewood, which is legally permitted in nearby forest areas. However, up to 70% of forest biodiversity depends directly or indirectly on deadwood and healthy forest ecosystems require it.

Deadwood provides habitat and food for fungi, lichens, insects, birds, and many other organisms, supports nutrient cycling, stores moisture and carbon, and increases forest resilience to climate change. Excessive removal of deadwood can significantly reduce biodiversity and negatively impact the long-term health of forest ecosystems. Here is my short comment on this topic for Aravot News.
